India reported 41,506 new cases of coronavirus and 895 related deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry. The current active caseload is 4,54,118. Total recoveries stand at 2,99,75,064 across India with 41,526 patients having recovered during the last 24 hours. The recovery rate has increased to 97.2%.

About 37.60 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive, the government said. In the last 24 hours, 37,23,367 doses were administered.

On Saturday, India had logged 42,766 new infections and 1,206 fatalities.

Turkey reports 5,261 new COVID-19 cases, 5,481,555 in total

Turkey on Sunday confirmed 5,261 new COVID-19 cases, raising its total tally of infections to 5,481,555, according to its health ministry.

The deaths from the virus in Turkey rose by 37 to 50,229, while 5,242 more people recovered in the last 24 hours.

A total of 222,068 tests were conducted over the past day, the ministry said.

Turkey started mass COVID-19 vaccination on January 14 after the authorities approved the emergency use of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine.

Assam logs 1,579 new COVID-19 cases, 16 more fatalities

Assam on Sunday reported 16 more COVID-19 deaths, which took the number to 4,828, pushing the total number of infections to 5,33,663, according to a bulletin issued by the National Health Mission (NHM).

The coronavirus caseload in the northeastern state mounted to 5,33,663 as 1,579 more people tested positive for the infection.

The bulletin said, 1,347 more COVID-19 patients have died till now, but the government’s Death Audit Board has not included them in the tally of deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus as they had other ailments too.

Currently, the state has 19.972 active COVID-19 cases. As many as 2,793 people were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,07,516, it said.

COVID-19: Five more deaths in UP, 125 fresh cases

With five more COVID-19 deaths, the number in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 22,698, while the tally of cases has climbed to 17,07,350 with 125 fresh coronavirus infections in the state, the government said on Sunday.

Of the fresh deaths, two were reported from Gorakhpur, while one death each was reported from Jhansi, Mirzapur and Jaunpur, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement.

Out of the 125 new cases, 20 were reported from Sultanpur, while six cases were reported each from Lucknow, Prayagraj and Varanasi.

In the past 24 hours, 134 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the disease, and been discharged. This has pushed the total number of recoveries to 16,83,058.

South Africa extended tight COVID-19 rules on Sunday for another 14 days, maintaining restrictions that include a ban on all gatherings, a curfew from 9 p.m to 4 a.m and a prohibition on the sale of alcohol. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the cabinet had decided to maintain “adjusted alert level 4” in a five-level system of restrictions.

US Top Coronavirus Advisor Terms Delta Strain Of Covid As “Nasty Variant”

US top coronavirus adviser Dr Anthony Fauci on Sunday (local time) characterised the Delta strain of COVID-19 as a “nasty variant”.

“It is very clear that this is a nasty variant. It has a much greater capacity of transmitting from person to person,” Fauci said, adding that the COVID vaccines that are being used in America to fight the coronavirus “are working very well” and do protect against the Delta variant.

“The bad news is that we have a very nasty variant, the good news is that we have a vaccine that works against it,” The Hill quoted Fauci’s interview with ABC’s “This Week.”

The nation’s leading infectious disease doctor also voiced concern for what he called a “schism between some states and some areas that have a very low level of vaccination.”

US “Very Concerned” Covid Variants Could Risk Recovery: Top Official

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday she was “very concerned” about the risk that new variants of coronavirus could pose to the global economic recovery from the pandemic.

“We are very concerned about the Delta variant and other variants that could emerge and threaten recovery,” she told reporters following a G20 meeting in Venice, Italy.

“We are a connected global economy, what happens in any part of the world affects all other countries.”

Woman, 90, In Belgium Dies After She Was Infected With 2 Covid Variants At Same Time: Researchers
A 90-year-old woman who died after falling ill with Covid-19 was infected with both the Alpha and Beta variants of the coronavirus at the same time, researchers in Belgium said Sunday, adding that the rare phenomenon may be underestimated.

The unvaccinated woman, who lived alone and received at-home nursing care, was admitted to the OLV Hospital in the Belgian city of Aalst after a spate of falls in March and tested positive for Covid-19 the same day.

While her oxygen levels were initially good, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she died five days later.

US “Very Concerned” Covid Variants Could Risk Recovery: Top Official

Israel Offers Pfizer Vaccine Booster Shots To Adults At Risk Of Covid
Israel said on Sunday it will begin offering a booster shot of Pfizer Inc’s vaccine to adults with weak immune systems but it was still weighing whether a third round of shots should be given to the general public.

The rapid spread of the Delta variant has sent vaccination rates in Israel back up as new infections have risen over the past month from single digits to around 450 a day.

Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said that effective immediately, adults with impaired immune systems who had received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine could get a booster shot, with a decision pending on wider distribution.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding the COVID-19 death figures, and claimed the state government did not want to give the statistics as it did not want to help the people. “The government did not give the statistics pertaining to the COVID-19 deaths, nor any help was given to them. They (UP government) did not give the statistics of COVID-19 deaths, as they did not want to help (the people),” he told reporters.

COVID-19 India News: 19 New Cases In Ladakh; 35 More Recover
Nineteen new cases of coronavirus were reported in Ladakh, raising its tally to 20,186, while 35 more patients were cured of the infection, officials said on Saturday, reported news agency PTI. All the 19 persons who returned positive for COVID-19 are from Leh district, health department officials said. No death due to COVID-19 was reported in the union territory in the past 24 hours, they said. So far 206 people, including 148 in Leh district and 58 in Kargil district, have died due to the viral disease, officials said. Of the 35 patients cured and discharged on Saturday, 33 were from Leh and two from Kargil, they said. A total of 19,865 patients have been cured of the disease till now in the UT.

COVID-19 India News: “Report Likely Soon”: Official On Uttarakhand COVID Testing Scam Probe
The investigation into the alleged Uttarakhand COVID testing scam which took place during the Kumbh this year is in final stages and the report is likely to be received in the next 2-3 days, said Haridwar District Magistrate C Ravishankar on Sunday, according to news agency ANI. “The report would be sent to the Uttarakhand government for action,” he said in an official statement.

The investigation team has so far checked 60,000 telephone numbers while, 25,000 phone numbers are yet to be investigated. These are the phone numbers mentioned in the documents along with the names of those who got their COVID-19 test done during the Kumbh Mela.

COVID-19 India News: Provided Over 38.60 Crore Vaccine Doses To States, UTs So Far: Centre
The Union Government on Sunday said that more than 38.60 crore vaccine doses have been provided to States and UTs so far and a further 11 lakh 25 thousand 140 doses are in the transit, reported news agency ANI. More than 1.44 crore balance and unutilized COVID vaccine doses are still available with States/UTs and private hospitals to be administered, said the Centre.

The health ministry said the government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country.

More than 38.60 crore (38,60,51,110) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far, through all sources and a further 11,25,140 doses are in the transit, according a release by the Centre. Of this, the total consumption includes wastage of 37,16,47,625 doses, as per the data available at 8 AM today. Over 1.44 crore (1,44,03,485) balance and unutilized COVID vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs and private hospitals to be administered, said the government.

The weekly positivity rate remains below 5%, currently at 2.32%. The daily positivity rate is at 2.25%, less than 3% for 20 consecutive days. 37.60 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive, the government said.
COVID-19 India News: 429 New Cases In Maharashtra’s Thane, 8 More Deaths
With the addition of 429 new cases of COVID-19, the infection count in Maharashtra’s Thane district has gone up to 5,37,358, an official said on Sunday, reported news agency PTI. Besides these new cases reported Saturday, the virus also claimed the lives of eight more people, pushing the death count in the district to 10,836, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 2.01%, he added. Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration.

In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,18,146, while the death count has reached 2,632, another official said.

COVID-19 India News: Arunachal Recommends Lockdown In State Capital As Positivity Rate Remains High
After recording a COVID-19 positivity rate of over 5% for the last few days, the Arunachal Pradesh government has recommended a complete lockdown in capital Itanagar to curb the spread of the virus, reported news agency ANI. According to Talo Potom, Deputy Commissioner Itanagar, a meeting was held for the implementation of lockdown in the capital city.

“After recording a test positivity rate over 5% for a few days, we held a meeting with stakeholders for the implementation of lockdown in the district. We’ve given a recommendation to state government for a complete lockdown for a week,” Mr Potom told the media.

As per the state health ministry, Arunachal Pradesh reported 478 new COVID-19 cases out of 5,818 tests on Saturday. The COVID positivity rate stands at 8.22%. Earlier last week, the Centre had rushed multi-disciplinary teams to six states, including Arunachal Pradesh, for COVID-19 control and containment measures, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed.

Australia reported its first coronavirus-related death of the year on Sunday and a 2021 record 77 new cases of the virus in the state of New South Wales, which is battling an outbreak of the highly infections Delta variant, reported Reuters.

State Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the numbers in and around Sydney, which is in a three-week lockdown, are expected to rise further in coming days. “I’m anticipating the numbers in New South Wales will be greater than 100 tomorrow,” Berejiklian told a televised briefing. “I will be shocked if it is less.”

On Saturday there were 50 cases, the previous 2021 record high. This takes the recent outbreak to 566 cases. Of Sunday’s cases, 33 were people who had spent time in the community while they were infectious, deepening concerns that the lockdown of more than 5 million people in Sydney and surroundings will be extended.

COVID-19: Sydney imposes stricter rules to curb spread of Delta variant

Authorities in Australia’s largest city, Sydney imposed new stricter rules to curb the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus.

Lockdown measures in Sydney were due to end on Friday, but have been extended for another week through July 16, reported NHK World.

The variant outbreak has mostly affected Sydney. On Friday, 44 new cases were reported in the south-eastern state of New South Wales, where Sydney is located.

New stricter rules restrict how people exercise, saying they must stay within 10 kilometers of their home and not meet up with more than one person from another household, reported NHK World.

Daily infections in Tamil Nadu drop below 3,000

Tamil Nadu on Saturday reported 2,913 new COVID-19 cases, which include those of five returnees from other States, the Health Department said.

This pushed the total infected so far to 25,16,011, the department said.

Forty-nine deaths today took the toll to 33,371 till date, the department said.

As many as 3,321 people got discharged during the day aggregating to 24,49,873 leaving 32,767 active infections, according to a bulletin.

COVID-19: Maharashtra reports 8,296 new cases, 179 deaths

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 8,296 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 179 fatalities while 6,026 patients recovered, the state health department said.

With the new additions, the COVID-19 tally in Maharashtra climbed to 61,49,264 and the death count to 1,25,528.

Of the 179 fatalities, 143 occurred in last 48 hours while 36 in the last week. Additionally, 315 deaths have been added to the cumulative toll report of Maharashtra, which means the overall fatality count has gone up by 494 compared to Friday, the health department said in a report.

A health official said 6,026 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries so far in Maharashtra to 59,06,466, leaving the state with 1,14,000 active cases.
